Bernie is HLV’s lovable mascot and is about 3 or 3 1/2 or 4 or… we don’t really know because Bernie was a rescue dog we adopted from the Pasadena Humane Society! When we adopted him we figured he was just an adorable mutt even though the Humane Society was trying to pawn him off as a Bearded Collie — which he looks absolutely nothing like. But at the dog park one day a woman asked if he was a PBGV. A what? A PB&J? We had no idea what a PBGV was but it turns out it’s a fairly obscure French breed: the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. It was hilarious to then go online and see hundreds of photos of our ‘mutt.’ It’s a very descriptive name — Petit (small) Basset (low to the ground) Griffon (rough-coated) Vendeen (from the Vendée area of France).
The most interesting thing is that PBGVs are nicknamed ‘The Happy Breed’ because of their very friendly, social personalities and Bernie is nothing if not a happy boy! He loves everyone, especially customers, and expects everyone who comes in to scratch his head and make a fuss over him. Which they do. Bernie has his corner in the store next to a beautiful Vico Magistretti sofa where he loves to lay on the cold cement floor. But he makes his rounds (the trash cans are a favorite stop) and sometimes has to be dissuaded from following customers into the dressing rooms. We think he just has strong opinions about what looks good on a woman and simply wants to give his 2 cents.
